Review
In Cruising Ports, Pat Rains shares her wealth of local knowledge about this popular cruising route. This book organizes an enormous amount of practical information into a consise form that's easy for boaters to use - as they plan their itinerary and as they voyage from port to port - making this adventure safer and more enjoyable. The charts zoom in on the major harbors, anchorages and cruising grounds. And the photography brings back happy memories of my own cruising adventures. --Lowell North, circumnavigator, founder North Sails.

Cruising Ports: the Central American Route by Capt. Patricia Rains covers all the major harbors and provides more than enough information for those passing through or cruising for a month or so. It includes accurate GPS charts and waypoints - something Charlie's lacked. --Beth Leonard, editor, Cruising World Magazine

Not worth the price - Get Raucher's instead
By Gravitational Wave Rider
Rains starts out by saying she doesn't provide waypoints because she doesn't want people to concentrate too much on the chart plotter while entering the ports and then refers you to Rauchers' guide repeatedly for those waypoints. Her book is not nearly as comprehensive as Raucher's and does not cover nearly as many of the Belizean Cays or details of the atolls as Raucher. Though one would be lead to believe that Rains had the most up to date information since it is Edition 6.5 for the 2013-2014 sailing season. You will find that her Rio dulce information, a major cruising destination for CRUISERS, is quite simply WRONG (they may be perfect for "Yatisas", though)(sarcasm). DO NOT USER HER WAYPOINTS FOR THE RIO DULCE. Rain's guide has the inbound route 900 feet to port of Raucher's and converges to 300 feet to port inside the sand bar. Her waypoint for the entrance marker is WRONG. Since the route over the sand bar is only 300 feet wide you will run aground if you follow her waypoints. I plotted hers and Freya Raucher's and as I came in I deviated from Raucher's toward Rains until the water depths indicated that I would run aground if I continued. Raucher's guide is the best for this area and in all but a very minor instance or two is correct and reliable.Rains does not provide any information as to when her soundings and waypoints were surveyed so you cannot evaluate their reliability based upon that criterion. At least, with Raucher I know there have been no updates since 2007.

And on a much more minor note but still an irritation; I have never been called a "Yatista" by anyone. I have been cruising the Yucatan Peninsula, the Bahamas and the Gulf Coast for several years and I have never heard a single person of any culture use such a pretentious term. Call me a cruiser or a sailor or a live-aboard or even a pirate....but what the heck is a "Yatista"???(rhetorical question).

Bottom line: spend your money on Raucher's guide and get a lot more information that is actually useful to planning and safety and accurate navigation along Mexico, Belize and the Rio Dulce of Guatemala. I would like my money back.

Builds confidence in the would-be voyager
By D. GRENWICH
This book has given me the confidence to check into some more interesting ports in countries such as Cuba and Guatemala on our upcoming trip, allowing us to take shorter offshore routes and do more coastal cruising. I would like to do a post-trip review of the book (we leave this Fall), but have read it completely in the meantime. The chapter on the Panama Canal transit is comprehensive and puts my mind at ease about how to get through without incurring fines or getting into other difficulties. I'm now looking for the Mexico West Coast book by Captain Rains.

Very Well Done
By Curtis Collins
Very well done and up-to-date guide.

While the guide is intended to be primarily a route planning guide (and does an excellent job of achieving that result), it also gives a surprising amount of information which you would normally associate with a "cruising guide" in a very concise format.
