About the Author
Shadi Bartsch is chair of the Department of Classics and a professor in the Committees on the History of Culture and on the Ancient Mediterranean World at the University of Chicago. She is also the editor in chief of Classical Philology, coeditor of the Oxford Encyclopedia of Rhetoric, and author of numerous works, including Ideology in Cold Blood and Actors in the Audience. Thomas Bartscherer is a doctoral candidate in the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago.

13 Ways of Looking at a Lovebird

An interesting, provocative book. It could have used more illustrations (so much to choose from on this topic!) but the essays are generally of high quality and the responses spice it up (the Lear/Zizek exchange, for example, is a gem). Writing style varies greatly, from the scholarly to the quasi-confessional to poetry and fiction. Any reader is bound to like some pieces more than others, but you can skip around with relative impunity, and the introduction ties it all together pretty nicely. It's fun to watch art and theory battle for dominion in the realm of love. I say the palm goes to art.

There is not one single mention of my groundbreaking work "Cyberpornography and the Lucid Human Palpitations therein. Honestly, as a colleague of Thomas and a dear dear sweet fat-free friend, I was wounded, perhaps n'ot mortally but certainly enough to warrant a bench named after me. My sacrifices in the name of pornography are grand, astounding, sleek - viscous, even, like a train slipping through the night like a thief with a bag full of hamburgers stuffed with gold like hiding knives in carrots. This all too much, the torpor makes it difficult to keep my hands from the pistol displayed oh so conveniently near my crotch. Some call it flagrant, I call it a wise investment! Why keep a laptop upon your longing loins? Do you wish to soil Elysian Fields? Put fences around Arcadia? DEnizens of the Bronx would beg the differ but the differ is on his cigarette break. Seriously, this book helped me possess a sense of disquieting intimacy. What better to steal away your own confidence in the bathroom than to bind it together with dead trees and soliloquize it?"

May be the the best book on this subject

This is the book for those who already have some background in micro economics. So I will not recommend the book for the fresh student. However, if you know some mathematics and have studied micro economics: This is the book for you. In fact it is the best book I have seen on this subject.

Joseph is letting his secrets out here, this book is worth its weight in gold

Magic in Action was Richard Bandler's book that took you behind the scenes of what he was doing in NLP in this book Joseph takes you behind the scenes of what he does with the MythoSelf Process.

In the foreword Richard Bandler says: "As you are reading you will find yourself immersed in the experience of what it is like to access the Ready State along with the participants in the workshop. Rather than telling you about what he did, Joseph brings you with him on a journey of profound transformation. This alone would make this book unique and remarkably worthwhile, however he goes further.... Much further. Interspersed in the exchanges from the transcripts Joseph pulls back the curtain and exposes exactly what he's doing with the group and why he is doing it.

If you've ever hoped to experience the work of a master change artist in action here's a chance in black and white."

The 'Ready State' is the product of the MythoSelf Process, the ability to respond and to take action to get the result you intend. Leadership experts Peter M. Senge and Joseph Jaworski speak to this in their more recent work. That when leaders have 'presence' as they define it things that weren't possible before become possible.

What Dr. Joseph Riggio reveals is the 'how to' for this. How you lead yourself, and when you can do that how it becomes possible to lead others.

If you've read Jaworski and Senge you'll understand that when I describe what Joseph does as spiritual how that connection or fulfilment is a requirement for a leader. But while they talk about and share their spiritual experiences Joseph actually takes you through the process of how to make this connection for yourself.

In the book Joseph says: "You'll begin to notice again the details of what it was like for you at one time to pay attention to the world around you in that very positive, hypersensitive way that children have - kind of like how you might imagine Sherlock Holmes, Indiana Jones, Gandalf, or maybe you might prefer the idea of a Jedi Knight like Yoda, Obi Wan Kenobi or Luke Skywalker might do it." I've worked with Joseph as a private client and that situational awareness is now my personal experience.

What's fascinating is hearing Joseph telling you what he is doing after he has done it with the group so you can see the structure of how a professional exquisite communicator works. Its great to see this to how you can incorporate this 'conversational hypnosis' in the communication that you do whether that is in a meeting, making a presentation or just influencing those you care about to help them make the right decision.

I've read Dan Seigel and a lot of neuroscience but Joseph shows the practical application of using this knowledge: "The idea of accessing a best state, or as I prefer it the Ready State is based on the neurological condition of the excitatory bias. As you've already read, when you are operating from the excitatory bias the neurological system is open to receiving new data. The excitatory bias is based on the somatic, or body based configuration that you are holding. Literally where in your body you are holding relaxations and contractions, and how this translates into your posture, gestures and expressions, forms the ground of your experience."

I've learnt from Joseph what I perhaps understood intellectually but couldn't really put into a practice that gets results, that I think with my body just as much with my head. And paying attention to this 'primal wisdom' enables me to perform at a significantly more elite level and get the results that come from that both professionally AND personally.

In many ways I'd like to buy all the copies of this book and just give them to my clients, friends and family. But I can't do this as it's published in Kindle format. I've paid thousands for hours of Joseph's time and it was worth every penny. Joseph is letting his secrets out there, this book is worth its weight in gold. Experience for yourself the value of interacting with a world-class leadership coach and mentor, someone who can enable in you the transformation that makes extraordinary success and elite performance possible. This could be the first step on your Hero's Journey which Joseph brings a depth of understanding and practical usefulness to that I've not seen anywhere else, and I've read most of Joseph Campbell's work.

Narcissistic, crude attempt to manipulate reader so as to elevate Riggio's ego

We start with reading two chapters where Riggio repeatedly tells us what reading the book will do for us. Presumably some kind of framing.

He goes on to try to pace the reader/audience with truisms of how lost and confused we must be inside our own lives. Then voila! We have the answer! It's him! It's Joseph Riggio! He and the book are the miraculous savior we have been waiting for!
Frankly, his ideas are common and banal. My impression is that he is disconnected, not having actually embodied what he preaches. He may like "the State of Perfection" but I doubt he has any first hand experience of it, at least at the time of writing. What comes through is insecurity and cheap sophistry.
In the transcripts of one-to-one work he includes in the book, he uses every line with JOSEPH RIGGIO so we know who to credit for his miraculous wisdom. Don't most transcripts use initials?
I wanted to like this book. When I saw another reviewer write that it's 'manipulative' I thought that may be interesting to model, useful in some way. Now that I've read this book, I understand that yes, it is manipulative but it's done by what I infer as an insecure person in a very obvious and cheesy way. Give it a miss. Go read Milton Erickson books instead.

Great reading

A terrific thriller, Ludlum in top form. This is back in the days when his intricate plots made sense and fit like a glove. He also kept the page count down in this one, never padding the book, and never veering into unnecessary sidetracks (like ICARUS AGENDA's 100+ page prologue!)
I can't see a thriller fan not loving this book, nor failing to appreciate the brilliant device Ludlum uses to get the action going. If you've never read Ludlum, this is a great place to start.

The best by the best

The Chancellor Manuscript by Robert Ludlum is a first rate book by the number one Thriller writer in my opinion. Buy it, I believe you will enjoy it.
The plot is about a famous writer, Peter Chancellor, who has been given the task of writing a novel by a group called the Inver Brass, a sinister group with an ulterior motive of finding out who among them is a traitor. The topic of the novel must be the assassination of J. Edger Hoover. When the author comes too close to exposing the existence and identities of the group and its members they try to discredit him and his work. They try to drive him crazy by turning everything he writes as fiction into reality. Not only that but the villains that he has created are actually trying to kill him. Meanwhile the Inver Brass are trying to convince him he is delusional.
It is the reader in the end who must decide what is fiction and what is real as the novel works its way through twists and turns in the wonderful way only a Ludlum novel can produce. It the end all comes together rather nicely.
His characters are as usual, both realistic and developed. The writing is superb. The suspense nail biting. It is simply the best by the best.

Robert Ludlum -- Master of the Espionage Novel

I am hooked on Robert Ludlum's books. I gave up romance after I turned 20, moved on to murder mysteries (Ellery Queen genre), but I never experienced an author that could keep me awake until 3:00 in the morning, not only with this book--but with all of them!
I have read The Chancellor Manuscripts, all three of the series of the Bourne books, and just finished the Holcroft Covenant, which teases and hints at a sequel in the last few pages, and I'm crossing my fingers there is one (have to still check out his list of books).
The twist, as expected in any Ludlum novel, occurs about half-way through the book, from a direction the reader would never guess, and involves a woman (the hero always has to get his gal in Ludlum's novels!), and this right after he experiences something that forces him to run for his life, hide from those he loves, and/or forces him to cut his communications from any normal life that the hero would normally use if this was real life.
While Ludlum's books smack of a 'formula,' I'm hooked--you know that something unusual is going to happen to the main character, he's going to be forced to give up his normal life to go out and 'save the world,' he'll use life-long aquaintances for help throughout the book (although about 85% end up in a morgue by the end of the story), there's lots of shooting of the bad guys, a damsel in distress who will initially hate or distrust the main character, then fall in love with him, and after which everybody shoots at each other and more bad and good guys die, then the hero either ends up being 'savior' of the world, or he ends up chopped to pieces (ouch), but survives to take on the bad guys again.
Don't try this plot at home--only Ludlum can add enough realistic and believable imagery to convince you of the reality of the story with his details. I was surprised that this is the only book of Ludlum's so far to have the scenery completely fall within the continental USA versus his European settings for all his other books. While the details are pretty amibiguous in this book, they are realistic enough to give you a feel for the location (versus his precise details and descriptions of European sites in his other novels).
If you haven't tried a Ludlum novel, pick one up--any one, and enjoy an espionage thriller that only a master like Ludlum can write.

A Fascinating and enthralling Read!

This second book in the series does not disappoint. 'Forgotten' left us with a cliff hanger and be warned that this will do the same but truly there is no other way to maintain the tension in both the book and the two leading characters, and rest assured, we do get our answers. We get answers and we get more questions and I can't wait to see where it all ends.

The world-building is novel and more than a little macabre. It is a combination of old world living standards and the new and it is disturbing. In cutting themselves off the vampires have ensured their food supply but also stunted the growth of worldly knowledge much to the detriment of both the humans and themselves. The ensuing isolation has enforced delusions of power and grandeur.

The author has created a very nice twist to the vampire legend further dehumanising these creatures to the point that we have to wonder at times at Rebecca's fascination. Leander is brutal, cruel and single-minded but underneath we do sense something and being the perverse lovers of romance that we readers are, we hope she will be the one to make a difference.

Rebecca on the other hand is a strange mixture of weakness and strength, acceptance and rebellion but like Leander there is something in her that holds us enthralled, perhaps even the fact that she stands out when she is so ordinary and it gives us a sense of power to know someone can do that. The sexual tension is intricate and chilling, constant on her part and forbidding on his. Yet his very determination to avoid her is the aphrodisiac that draws her to him.

As you can see I am a very big fan of this writer. She has the ability to bring us characters that make a connection despite their questionable behaviours. Leander is intelligent and very powerful but yet he fails to take action when he should and misreads obvious situations. He thinks naively his position is enough to keep control of the blood-thirsty (literally) world he inhabits and this lends him humanity even if Rebecca pays the price. In this novel she has 'Remembered' what she had forgotten - what next?

Couldn't put it down!

I've been a fan of Caroline Hanson novels since the Valerie Dearborn series. She's always managed to write stories that create a world you can fall into and feel like you're a part of. This series is no different. There's just enough characterization to not overwhelm you with details, just enough scenery to not draw away from the action, just enough darkness to excite you, and just enough pleasantly to not turn you away. The characters are all there for a purpose; there are no extra people thrown in for no reason. The summaries don't detract from your sense of time as you read. And the plot just gets thicker and thicker.

Rebecca Finner was living a "life" that had been provided to her because she'd lost her own and all memory of it. Pieces of who she was managed to shine through when her emotions rose, but you never really got a good idea of what that life was like until now. In Remembered, we see why she reacts to pressure the way she does, why she reacts to threat the way she does, and even why she was provided with the life she had. We get to see Leander more clearly and where their relationship began, but even after Remembered, you're left with questions. A perfect way to make readers crave the next novel. How did she end up in New York? Where did the snow globe come from? How did Jessica get from one place to another? And where did the tonic come from?

When the next story in the series is released. I'll definitely be buying it. I can't wait to escape again into the dark world of Rebecca Finner and the mystery behind the who's chasing her. I recommend this series to readers who like a fresh story they can dive into and not get mired in for the next 10 years, lol. Thanks, Miss Hanson, for supplying us with another great write!

Review of Long and Sedley's 'Hellenistic Philosophers'

In their introduction, the authors compare this work to the Raven and Kirk collection of reports on the Presocratic philosophers. In many ways, this is a very accurate comparison. Long and Sedley present a great collection of reports on the Hellenistic philosophers, many of whom (most of whom) do not have any surviving first hand accounts of their lives and doctrines.

Chapters are divided into schools, and subdivided into topics (ethics, logic, etc.). After each subdivision, the authors offer insightful analysis of the doxographical material that aids the reader's understanding of context, and usually works to put the various (sometimes divergent) reports together.

One important distinction between Raven and Kirk is the accessibility of this collection. Long and Sedley have separated the English translations in a separate volume, and placed the original Latin and Greek sources in a second volume. This makes the work less intimidating.

There were a few awkward cuts and organizations, but nothing to make this any less than a top-notch piece of scholarship. It was much better than Hackett's 'Hellenistic Philosophy'.

Content is great, but the product is garbage

Content is great, but the product is garbage. The newest edition is produced from a scan of an older edition. Text is pixelated. Binding is horrible. Utterly unacceptable for a $50 book. You should be ashamed of yourselves, Cambridge University Press.

An essential resource for everyone interested in studying all the available fragmentary texts of and about the Hellenistic philosophers – especially the Stoics, Epicureans, and skeptics. Volume 1 contains English translations with elaborate commentary and indexes. (Volume 2 contains the original Greek and Latin texts.)

Must Have for Patch Collectors

Very informative, good pictures. Easy to follow and use. Must have for any patch collector. Mostly army patches. Still a good find. This is second one I bought, 1st one for father who retired from Air Force, 2nd one for family friend after seeing my dads. Now two happy old war vets!

Patches patches and more patches

My father is a WWII patch collector, so I got him this guide as a gift after seeing it at the Viet Nam Travelling memorial in another collectors stack of books. It replaced his old one that is no longer in print anywhere and has even upgraded his information a little bit.

Now, if I could just get him on the computer more so he can read his emails....

Investing vs Trading is a must read for anyone who wants to learn about making smart financial decisions.

Investing vs Trading is extremely well written and has increased my knowledge of the subjects dramatically. Recently, I have become much more interested in getting into the stock market but wanted to take the time to learn how it works before jumping in. This book contains multiple examples and graphs that are simple to understand and back up the text. Steve Ryan is extremely honest and provided the true information that I was looking for. When dealing with a large amount of money and making financial decisions for my future I am not looking for a sugar coated fake answer. Ryan took the time to provide the Pro's and Con's of trading and investing and thoroughly explained each and how they function. The in-depth knowledge that Ryan has is very apparent, I particularly enjoyed the relevant quotes he chose. I'd recommend this book to anyone who is interested in their financial future and what to do with their money.

Either you are a longer term or short term investor, this book is recommended for you.

The author did a great job pointing the fact that most people invest in stocks the same way as they gamble on the roulette table. With few examples that actually happened (such as Apple stock), the author offered a solution to "think long term like an investor, but act short term like a trader" in order to be consistently profitable in the market.

I think this book will apply to everyone who is involved in the speculation industry, whether stock traders, bond traders, commodities traders, or even forex traders. Overall, recommended book with a fresh look on how to invest in the market without getting killed.

Whether you are new to investing or a seasoned investor, this book will open your mind

Steve's book tells the investing stories, both good and bad. His point on how most people treat investing like gambling is spot on. Steve's argument that small, retail investors are not to compete with the big players head to head, but instead to play the game smartly.

You might or might not agree with Steve's points of views but you cant argue that you have learned everything in investing. This book will at least shake your comfort zone and challenge most things that you previously know.

Overall, extremely informative with enjoyable real trading situations.
