The Real Middle-Earth: Discovering the Origin of 'The Lord of the Rings', by Michael Muhling

JRR Tolkien’s inspiration for his best-selling books, The Lord of the Rings, has always been a mystery. Tolkien himself stated that his ideas came to him as though they already existed, but he couldn’t name their source. For generations countless researchers and biographers have sought to identify Tolkien’s inspiration without success. Now, at last, the answer is at hand. Abyssinia. Abyssinia (modern day Ethiopia) was an ancient Christian Empire that was one of the world’s four greatest powers after the time of Christ, but it became isolated by the rise of Islam. Besieged in its highland fortress, it became a land untouched by the passage of time. It survived as the only part of Africa that was not colonized by European powers, and became internationally prominent in the years immediately prior to Tolkien’s writing because of the Italian war in 1935. Home to a 3,000 year old dynasty of kings and the horse-riding prowess of the Oromo tribe, Abyssinia’s history is rich and varied. The legends of its greatest saints are unique, and around its borders it faced powerful enemies. The Real Middle-earth: Discovering the Origin of The Lord of the Rings reveals fascinating insights into Tolkien and the ancient realm of Abyssinia, and makes connections between them that will leave you astounded. ‘I enjoyed this book very much because it endeavours to understand the thoughts of the author JRR Tolkien, the writer of the greatest fictional series ever written, The Lord of the Rings and the much loved The Hobbit. … A great book … If you have ever wondered what JRR Tolkien was like and what he was thinking of when he wrote The Lord of the Rings, this book may help.’ —John Morrow’s ‘Pick of the Week’ ‘This study on the origin of the most popular book in the world – The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien – by unabashed Tolkien fan Michael Muhling is fascinating and detailed reading. This book is an absolute must for Tolkien fans! You will fall into these pages as we do into Tolkien’s world.’ —Wendy O’Hanlon, Acres Australia

A fascinating historic document
By Michael J. Mazza
"The Sovereignty and Goodness of God, Together with the Faithfulness of His Promises Displayed," by Mary Rowlandson, is a compelling piece of colonial American literature. First published in 1682, this autobiographical text represents a genre of literature known as the "captivity narrative": a first-person account of a white settler who was held as a hostage or prisoner by Native Americans. In Rowlandson's case, she was taken captive during Metacom's War (also known as King Philip's War), which took place in 1675-1676.
The edition of Rowlandson's book edited by Neal Salisbury is excellent. This edition contains Rowlandson's text, together with a wealth of other materials: a thorough introduction, many maps, a chronology, a bibliography, and other historic documents from Rowlandson's era. The many illustrations include photographs of the title pages of earlier editions.
Rowlandson's captivity narrative is a significant milestone in American literature; the introduction to the Salisbury edition notes that the text "has been almost continually in print since 1770." Since the text itself is relatively short, it has appeared in anthologies (see, for example, "The Harper Single Volume American Literature," third edition). But the many "extras" in the Salisbury edition definitely make it a book worth buying, even if you have an anthology already containing the Rowlandson text.
Rowlandson's memoir itself is not great literature stylistically. But it is a fascinating text with some really striking passages. Rowlandson's extreme evangelical Puritanism will likely alienate or bewilder some modern readers, but her religious attitude should be read in historic and cultural context. Similarly, her extremely racist descriptions of Indians ("merciless Heathen," "ravenous Beasts," etc.) should to be read in context (but should not be trivialized, especially in multiethnic classrooms where this text might be taught).
This book is a significant document of contact between cultures in times of extreme crisis. It is an especially intriguing text for those careful readers who really try to read "between the lines." Recommended as companion texts: William Apess' "A Son of the Forest and Other Writings" (Apess was a pioneer Native American writer) and James Fenimore Cooper's novel "The Last of the Mohicans."

great history and great literature, too
By Yalensian
Interestingly enough, I read this for a course on early American literature. But as a history major, I can say that it would have served equally well in a course on, say, Colonial New England or Social Life in Colonial America. It provides fascinating insights into Puritan life--especially into its religious beliefs and practices and the huge role they played in the life of a Puritan. Moreover, it chronicles the contact of two societies at odds: Puritans and Native Americans. Rowlandson's descriptions of her captors are exceedingly interesting and give depth to any consideration of life in early America. Salisbury's notes and introduction are also quite helpful. Read as a piece of literature, moreover, The Sovereignty and Goodness of God proves to be a fruitful topic for study, as well as a great complement to its function as an historical document. Considering my English course included some rather unsavory texts, this one was much appreciated and quite refreshing, too.

I put this book in the context of the time
By lanoitan
I decided to read this book after having read "Mayflower". It was apparently the first American bestseller and was popular in Britain also at the time. I was curious about how she was treated by the Indians. It certainly showed these Indians as ordinary people - which I should have expected. It did say something about these aborigines that they didn't rape her as so many other peoples would have done - spoils of war and all that. On the overall I found that the Indians treated her civilly. Of course the Indians had trouble finding food just as she did have obtaining food and they were trying to brave the attacks of her people all the time. The King Philip War was a tragedy. The Indians had been treated badly by the English (so what's new?)and in my estimation from what I read King Philip was not a jingoist like Moseley. Indeed I felt he was by nature a peaceful person like his father. I was shocked that the Mohawks sided against him. Well, war is hell and friends often turn into enemies for who knows what reason. At any rate, in conclusion, I felt that this is an important document and her religiosity was normal for the time, a time when John Hoar (a good guy) was thrown in jail for not attending church! I don't think you can appreciate this book using today's morals and behavior as the criterion.

From Library Journal
This volume is one of several produced in conjunction with the 14-part PBS Eyes on the Prize television series. It is a collection of over 100 court decisions, speeches, interviews, and other documents on the civil rights movement from 1954 to 1990. Included in the collection are the Brown v. Board of Education decision of the Supreme Court that declared legally segregated schools to be unconstitutional, Martin Luther King's "Letter from Birmingham City Jail," Harold Washington's inaugural speech after being elected mayor of Chicago, and the speech delivered by Nelson Mandela in Atlanta in June 1990. The chapter introductions written by the editors are sometimes too brief to enable readers to fully appreciate the context and importance of the documents. Nonetheless, the volume is rich in primary source material on the civil rights movement. It can be a valuable reference work for public and university libraries.

A valued companion to the study of the Civil Rights Movement
By Eric V. Moye
I think that this book is a valued companion to Taylor Branch's epic work "Parting the Waters". Together, they make an unbeatable pair of study aids for one of America's most turbulent periods.
While P.T.W. is a more dispassionate third person chronicle, E.O.T.P. is more personally driven. It brings to life individuals like Bayard Rustin, Stokley Carmichael, John Lewis and other giants (known and obscure) of the movement. Events from the Till lynching to the Attica riots as seen through the eyes of those on the scene (sometimes, those making the scene).
Fascinating reading.

First Hand Documents Bring You There
By J. J. Kwashnak
When you get involved in studying political events and movements, ultimately there is going to be some disagreement on interpretations. While the Civil Righs Movement has suffered less revisionist history than many events of the last century, it is still valuable to go to the source documents and read about events in the words of those who participated in history or who made history. I agree that this book works well in tandem with another more narrative history, such as Eyes on the Prize, or Partin the Waters. But the compilers have done an excellent job of grouping by topics, with clear introductions putting the pieces that follow into proper place. I was surprised - I feared that this would be more dry of a read than it was. Instead I found myself pulled along, especially by some riveting first hand accounts of events such as the Attica riots. Another big plus for the book is that it brings the documents and the struggles into the 1980's, when first published. Many books ont he Civil Rights Movement cover until 1965, or 1968, this one keeps events in the 1970's and 80's relevant to what came before. I highly recommend this for anyone who is looking to feel as if they were there for these struggles, and understand our history.

As king of Wessex, he strove to emulate those kings of the past who, in his own words, had 'succeeded both in warfare and in wisdom'. He led the battle against the Viking invaders of England, and presided over the revival of religion and learning among his people: his reputation is a measure of his success.

Alfred for High School Students
By A Customer
The author of this book (Asser) was a contemporary of King Alfred's and was brought to Wessex (Alfred's kingdom) in the ninth century as part of Alfred's plan to improve education and culture in Anglo-Saxon England. The text is highly readable and gives students an eyewitness account of Alfred's kingship: military successes and failures (esp. fighting the Vikings), advancement of English culture and education, consolidation of the seven kingdoms, and cultivation of Christian kingship in the Early Middle Ages. This kind of book is especially fun for students to read as it shows us "real history," including things such as Alfred's 20-year fight with some sort of intestinal disorder. We see Alfred as a man, not just an aloof, wooden figure that died long ago. This edition also includes maps, geneological charts of the Carolingian (i.e., "French") kings and the English kings up to Alfred, and a 29-page introduction by Simon Keynes and Michael Lapidge, which provides excellent background on the period in which Alfred and Asser lived. Also included are excerpts from the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, which was begun in Alfred's reign, extracts of Alfred's own writings and translations, and miscellaneous primary sources such as letters, books, and documents of the era. These items make good backgrounding for teachers. When this biography is read together with the Arthurian legend, it helps students to compare the real and the ideal kings of the Middle Ages.

Alfred the Great
By E. A. Kinzel
I am very fond of Penguin Classics, which combine a primary text with a thorough scholarly background. Sometimes I read part of the supplementary material, or none at all, or I read parts of it at my leisure later. In the case of this book, I read it in its entirety, from cover to cover.

Alfred was an extraordinary character. He had lifelong health problems of an unknown nature, yet was a proven and tenacious warrior. He reorganized his country's system of defense, and even designed a new type of ship to combat the Vikings (the details of which are tantalizingly unknown to us), yet he was also deeply interested in religious and literary matters, and fostered a renewal of learning and literacy in his kingdom.

When he took the throne, in 871, he was 23 years old, and the internal and international situation was deeply troublesome. Most of the petty Saxon and Angle kingdoms had "made peace" with the Vikings, a euphemistic term for paying them protection money in exchange for being left unmolested by the Viking armies. At the time of Alfred's ascension to the throne, in fact, a Viking army was more or less living year-round in Wessex. After a period of battling for survival, Alfred patiently gathered his strength for several years, finally uniting under his rule all English territories outside of the Viking Danelaw.

This book has more than 40 pages of introductory material, dealing with the historical background of Alfred's reign, including a portrait of his biographer Asser, as well as the numerous maps and genealogical tables one has come to expect from Penguin. The volume also includes extracts from the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle which are relevant to King Alfred, as well as from various charters, wills, and laws promulgated by him.

Of particular interest are the excerpts from the writings of King Alfred; he commissioned translations of works he considered of particular interest or importance, and many of these translations were made by Alfred himself. In many cases, the translations were more like commentaries, and an analysis of Alfred's interpretation of various works sheds an interesting light on the kinds of concerns (political, literary, and theological) he had. One fact which comes shining through, for example, is that he viewed his kingship as a personal and moral responsibility and approached it with great seriousness.

Readers interested in Dark Age or English history should find this edition indispensable, but I think that anyone would enjoy and benefit from reading about the life and deeds of the admirable King Alfred.

Nicely done sourcebook about Alfred the Great
By Christopher R. Travers
Alfred the Great is most popularly known as the king who burned the cakes. However, he was also the king who saved England from being entirely overrun by the Vikings, and he laid the groundwork for his daughter's campaigns which conquered the Viking settlements and territory in England. This book provides a great deal of insight on his life and accomplishments.

This book contains an extensive introduction which is substantially longer than any of the sources provided in the book, as well as the key contemporary sources regarding the life of Alfred the Great. These sources include the biography written of him by Bishop Asser, the relevant portions of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, translation of key religious works translated into Old English by Alfred the Great himself, and finally various legal documents authored by him.

The book also includes an appendix which examines the authenticity of the cake-burning story among other things, and extensive end-notes that make up approximately half of the volume.

All in all, this is a well put together sourcebook regarding the life of what was arguably England's greatest king. Highly recommended.

The assassins on their trail are utterly ruthless. For them, kidnapping, torture, and murder are all part of the job. But this time, they’re not up against ordinary cops or civilians.

CLASSIC THRILLER BY A MARINE TURNED AUTHOR
By charlie badger
Ted Nulty's fast paced, cannot put down book is great reading involving a drug cartel, military reaction when the Stanford's unsuspectingly purchase the content of a locker for charitable purposes to later discover its content includes hidden drug money. From that point forward it is a thriller in the Clancy, James Patterson, John Ramsey Miller tradition of twists, turns, the unexpected and action. I recently had the pleasure of meeting Ted unexpectedly at Bay Books in Coronado where he went to high school. Not having read his bio it was fascinating to learn his history. I started to read his book that day and could not put it down until I was finished. The Stanford's and their military friends battle with the drug cartel soldiers is, unfortunately, not too much of a stretch from reality for any town near the border. Its pace and cast of characters will keep you in the novel as soon as you start the fast pace movements it describes.

Incomparable Adrenaline Rush
By Ken Pecus
Rainbows and Butterflies... Is NOT what this action thriller is about. But when you are like me, and the majority of your interest revolves around people doing big Broadway production numbers, and your idea of drama might be whether The Vonn Trapps make it over the mountain, The Locker was certainly out of my sweet-spot. Add in the fact the last book review I did was probably a book REPORT in 8th grade, and you know something huge and impactful, compelled me to write this.

The one serious weakness I do have though, is for super heroes and anything to do with Marvel Comic productions. I'm an X-Men, Captain America et. al. aficionado. On a flight to Barcelona last summer I watched 4 X-Men movies in a row! #Junkie. I think it's mostly because I enjoy the feeling of enacting the super powers within each of us in the ULTIMATE WIN of good over evil. This is probably the central reason for my TOTAL obsession with this novel. Ted Nulty, in his jar head technical mindset, has either intentionally or inadvertently created a new 21st Century superhero (Tom Stanford) who's power resides in his brilliantly analytical mind, and superior skills training; as opposed to some external super power he was bequeathed. Of course every hero has his sidekick, and it is no different here. Except Tonto and Robin could only dream of being as feisty, intense, and all around kick-ass as Sheila Stanford - Agent 99 reborn 50 years later! Maybe the most attractive aspect of these heroes reside in their true embrace of their own humanity and those they love.

This was by far one of the fastest reads I have ever had. I average a book a week, predominantly non-fiction or trade technical, so I wasn't quite sure how I'd react to a crime thriller. Well it was near impossible for me to stop reading each night. I suspect I could have stayed up all day and night reading through, but I really enjoyed putting it down, just so I could pick it back up tomorrow. I felt from maybe about 25 pages into it, I was actually watching an action movie. Every aspect was so vivid and in HD in my mind.

Nulty's storyline made seamless transitions through dis separate scenes and never let you go too far away from any one important building block of the thriller. Personally I am a non-violent person so the systematic killings and conflict scenes could have left me in nightmares. However Nulty peppered the scenes with technical details that actually served to put a methodical blunt on the reality to the scene versus the true gore it represented. This was starkly contrasting to the majority of his writing which was (in my own terms), basic vernacular that we can all understand. It was nice not to need a dictionary to understand unnecessary words that some writers put in just to prove their literary prowess. At least that's how it worked for me. I'm sure this could be interpreted differently by a different personality. I suppose this would be where the genius of Ted Nulty's writing resides.

I truly hope that I have witnessed a new James Bond, Indiana Jones, or Wolverine being born here; and that I can look forward to several decades of re-incarnations of my new favorite action hero. Now if only Nulty will dress them in a cool X-Men outfit, all would be perfect in the world. Oh yeah, But then he probably did do that with the Dress Blues... I guess that might be the most inspiring uniform of them all!

great crime story
By lori
This is a good crime story that finally is on the market. The bad guys go down slowly. The characters in the story were very smart and did things by the book. Good for them. The story was exciting and sad at the same time, innocent people!e in the wrong place at the wrong time. I give this story 5 stars , Ted is a good author. If you are looking for a fast paced book this is the one you will want to read.
I enjoyed all the characters in the book, and all the excitement that went along with it.
I just wonder how many times a day people make mistakes and sell the wrong locker!
Thanks Ted for telling me about your books. Looking forward to reading more that you write. Keep up the good work !
