Great overview of how technology is making real estate transactions better for consumers and professionals

Today is Back to Work Monday. The holiday break is over and everyone is back in the ‘grind’ as they say. It is also the evening of the college National Championship Game and I have relatives in Florida and Alabama. With all of that said, there was a lot of competition for my attention today, the day I received a book written by Tyler Smith titled Going Paperless, Taking Real Estate into the 21st Century.

I cracked the book to read a few pages and planned to get back to it, but it was a page-turner and 98 pages later, there is 8 minutes left in the first half and Auburn has a 14-3 lead over Florida State.

In the book we learn about Tyler Smith and his path from adolescence to top producing REALTOR® to CEO of a 40 person technology company. It is the story of how SkySlope Transaction Management software came to be. It is a nice story of entrepreneurial spirit in real estate technology and definitely worth a read. Smith is clearly proud of his path, his success, his software, and his team at SkySlope. There is a little bit of chest pounding, but it is well deserved. He has built a successful product and a successful company.

Transaction management has been a thorn in the side of real estate since we started looking at real estate software in the early days of WAV Group consulting. Our transaction management adoption study is just as relevant today as it was when we first published it in 2005, then again in 2009, then again in 2012. In one study we surveyed over 1700 brokers from 22 MLSs. If I were to boil it all down to one word, it would be ADOPTION.

Smith does a good job talking about the problem of not being paperless. He does a nice job of characterizing the trouble of paper transactions. The old way invites tireless driving around, killing trees, escalating costs, increased liability, and escapades of searching and searching and searching for the missing paperwork. He should know. In 2009, at the top of his career as an agent he says he was completing 264 closings in California, with each file containing 200+ pages.

Smith built SkySlope around his workflow as an agents. It took him a few years to get it right, then he incorporated broker workflows. Rather than try to get brokers to adapt to his software, he designed the software to work the way the broker works. If you use a checklist for transactions, SkySlope will work for you. He claims that his software is not fancy, its simple.

Many of the largest brokers in America are on his platform today. The book has pages written by his customers including Dale Milton of DPR Realty; Mike Zagaris, PMZ Real Estate; J Scott Leonard CEO Guarantee Real Estate, A Berkshire Hathaway Affiliate; Larry Matos, President of Century 21 M&M. They all write about the tipping point in choosing SkySlope. The two strings that held them together was system flexibility and customer service.

I am sure that it is not easy to do this, but it is dedication to the customer that takes moxy.

About the Author

Abe Zeid (Boston, MA) is a professor of Mechanical, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at Northeastern University. He received his PH.D. degree from the University of Akron. Professor Zeid received his B.S. (with highest honor) and M.S. from Cairo University in Egypt. He has received various honors and awards both in Egypt and the United States. He is the recipient of both the Northeastern Excellence in Teaching Award and the SAE Ralph R. Teetor National Educational Award.

 

Professor Zeid is the author or co-author of many publications in journals and conference proceedings. He is also the author of the most several textbooks including Mastering SolidWorks, 1/e and Mastering the Internet, XHTML and JavaScript, 2/e (Pearson).

hands-on guide that is immediately useful

Overall, this book is a straightforward examination of performance analysis that explains why p.a. is more practial than traditional "training." It's a godsend for people who have to implement a plan right away because of the abundance of checklists and templates. I have some minor criticisms though since I have read several books in a similar category. 1 -- the author does not write as professionally as others (Rothwell, for example, who wrote Beyond training and Development) and spends too much time touting her earlier books 2 -- often the information borders on the extremely obvious 3 -- the book is overpriced as many textbooks are. P.A. boils down to the fact that it's really a "casing the joint" type of strategy -- get a general idea of the situation before diving in. All this fancy terminology for such a basic idea... still, it can definitely save a company a lot of time and money to do this common sense approach before spending money on training.

Guess who's coming to dinner

This book serves as the first course at a performance analysis dinner-it whets the appetite and entices the reader to look further and deeper. It provides the reader with tasty morsels of information without weighing the reader down in the heavier technicalities of performance analysis. First Things Fast is a quick and easy reference for the professional trainer and one that I will keep on hand for future use. It addresses the situation as it is-the way things are-and provides concrete examples and solutions for those involved with the process. Because of the quick and easy reading that characterizes the book, I would recommend this book to those who are seeking a basic understanding of performance analysis without wanting to invest a great deal of time. I would also recommend it to those who want a quick reference for use in their performance analysis work (the templates are an effective starting point for the line of questioning which needs to occur). First Things Fast has the potential to be an extremely useful tool for those individuals who are in the position to decide what needs to be done and why.

Great guide to quick human performance analysis

This book is a great help for anyone who is asked to analyze a performance problem. It provides a series of checklists and job aids to help someone figure out what's going on and how to fix it. It considers lots of problems and teaches you how to decide if the employee needs instruction, motivation or a changed environment. I really enjoyed this very practical and easy to read handbook; it avoids all the theory and jargon and puts the emphasis on analyzing human performance problems in a quick, efficient manner.

The first edition of Inside the Multinationals was a milestone book which applied the new theory of the multinational enterprises in a North American context. In it Alan Rugman popularized internalization theory. This argues that the key reason for the success of MNEs is their ability to internalize within their organizational structures, international transactions in goods and finance and thereby take advantage of the imperfections which exist in the world's markets. He helped to extend internalization theory as the cornerstone of research in the field of international business. The 1981 book has been widely cited by subsequent researchers. Although it has become a classic in the field it has been out of print for many years. Now with a new Introduction assessing the path-breaking contribution of the book, this 25th Anniversary edition gives scholars access to the original text. Professor Rugman now serves as President of the Academy of International Business.

Catharine Slade-Brooking has an industry background in branding, packaging and illustration with a client list including Glaxo Smith Kline, Lloyds Bank and the Sunday Times. She has written widely on graphic design subjects including 'The Encyclopedia of Illustration Techniques' and has exhibited work nationally and internationally, from the Mall Galleries in London to the Norsk Farmasihistorisk Museum Oslo.
She has taught within the University sector for over 15 years specializing in branding and visual identity and now teaches on the BA Graphic Communication course at Farnham UCA.

Excellent, practical and most useful resource for anyone involved in any stage or area of branding.

This is essential reading for any brand design student, startup, marketing manager or design professional. It is a thorough, comprehensive introduction and resource from start to finish, but thankfully not a verbosely dense tome. This 160-page guide is primarily a portable, easily accessible textbook with real-world exercises for students or junior account brand managers alike.

Very enjoyable with plenty of international case studies and presentation examples to reinforce points and typical scenarios one would face in the sometimes long, drawn-out journey of crafting a brand identity. Not heavy on process from a design perspective, but brand-centric from throughout, with some encouraging yet realistic words of wisdom (“process is more of a marathon than a sprint, requiring long-term building of brand").

Author Catharine Slade-Brooking, who has plenty of industry experience in branding, packaging and illustration under her belt, outlines eight logical chapters: branding basics, brand anatomy, brand strategy, the design process, research, analysis, concept development and delivering the final design. Slate-Brooking includes many good details to consider (e.g. knowing cultural norms when branding for a country outside of your own), and strategic pointers on how to successfully launch a brand from a creative perspective. Exercises and examples highlight the key activities undertaken by designers to create a successful brand identity, including defining the audience, analysing competitors, creating moodboards, naming brands, designing logos, presenting to clients, rebranding and launching the new identity. Filled with many good visuals throughout (sometimes too small to effectively illustration certain points), there is also a vital smaller section exploring the creative side of developing creative concepts. This guide, filled with many words of experience, is like a trustworthy mentor in book form.

Overall this is an excellent, practical and most useful resource for anyone involved in any stage or area of branding. The up-to-date current content includes every step from client/account relations to creative process to brand management, audits, launches, etc. to successfully launching a brand identity from beginning to end. It doesn’t continue on with what happens after the launch (maintaining and nurturing the brand in the months or years following the launch) but nevertheless, this book is definitely a keeper and very recommended.
