Review
"Judy Dunn has the happy knack of helping us to look afresh at the children we thought we knew - including our own. Her new book shows that in the context of friendship, children have an opportunity - from kindergarten upward - to go on imaginary adventures, to engage in give-and-take and, eventually, to learn about commitment in ways that the immediate family can rarely match. We glimpse children at their best in this delightful book - and sympathize all the more with those children who want to make friends but have none." Paul Harris, Harvard Graduate School of Education

"This magical new book by Judy Dunn explores the development of friendships in young children. She draws on close observation of toddlers, pre-schoolers and school children to demonstrate the role of intimate friendships in encouraging children to share ideas, coordinate pretend play and express affection for those that are not kin. This book will inform the practice of professionals who care for young children and intrigue parents – who will see immediately how the friendships of their own children are the spur to imagining what’s in the mind and heart of another." Kathy Sylva, Professor of Educational Psychology, University of Oxford

"Judy Dunn, one of our most astute chroniclers of children's social lives, provides a fascinating glimpse into the often neglected world of children's friendships. Using real-life illustrations from her own studies as well as rich insights from novelists and biographers, she convincingly shows the important place of friends in children's development. Parents as well as professionals will learn much from this timely and readable volume." Ross D. Parke, Director, Center for Family Studies, University of California Riverside

"Children's Friendships is a beautifully written account of children's early friendships by Judy Dunn, the leading international authority on childhood development." Primary Times, 29th Nov - 7th Feb 2005

"The excitement, the pleasures, problems and humour, the compelling intensity of these relationships with friends (and enemies) in writers' early lives and their fiction are interwoven in Children's Friendships with the present-day examples from the children in Dunn's research and that of others." SirReadaLot.org, January Issue.

From the Back Cover
Judy Dunn, a leading international authority on childhood development, provides a beautifully written account of children’s early friendships. Drawing on evidence from studies on both sides of the Atlantic, it considers the nature and significance of such relationships for children’s development and well-being. The book concludes by drawing out the practical implications of research for parents, teachers and those who care for children, including how to manage friendships at different developmental stages, how to help children with friendship difficulties, and what to do about ‘trouble-making’ friendships and bullying.

About the Author
Judy Dunn is Professor of Developmental Psychology at the Institute of Psychiatry. She is the author of numerous books, including The Beginnings of Social Understanding (Blackwell Publishing, 1988), Separate Lives: Why Siblings Are So Different (1992) and From One Child to Two (1995).

Highly recommended!
By books4parents
This book explains the largely forgotten importance of early social interaction, even among very young children and toddlers, and is especially valuable for parents considering home schooling. For example, there is research that shows early experience with same-age peers correlates with later success in life, and peer learning is more effective than learning from adult teachers.

An only-child is disadvantaged unless there are other children nearby to spend a lot of time with. In this day and age when some parents use "stranger danger" as an excuse to keep children prisoners in their own homes, and through isolation try to control every thought that goes through a child's head, this book is a sober and humbling corrective to the arrogance of many uninformed parents. Forced isolation should be considered a form of emotional abuse.

Working Methods: Comic Creators Detail Their Storytelling And Artistic Processes, by John Lowe

  • Professional comic artists interpret scripts every day as they successfully transform the written word into the visual form. However, rarely do we get to examine the process that is unique to each artist. Unlike any other "how-to" book, Working Methods puts the minds of comic artists under the microscope, highlighting the intricacies of the creative process step by step. For this book, three short scripts are each interpreted in different ways by professional comic artists to illustrate the varied ways in which they "see" and "solve" the problem of making a script succeed in comic form. Working Methods documents the creative and technical choices Mark Schultz, Tim Levins, Jim Mahfood, Scott Hampton, Kelsey Shannon, Chris Brunner, Sean Murphy and Pat Quinn make as they tell a story, thus allowing comic fans, artists, instructors, and students into a world rarely explored. Hundreds of illustrated examples document the artists' processes, and interviews clarify their individual approaches regarding storytelling and layout choices. In Working Methods, the exercise may be simple, but the results are profoundly complex.

Great reference for budding and professional artists
By Don Low
The book has a great help in understanding how other artists go about creating their work. I have always been very interested to know how artists have their setup in the studio, and he book has provided beautiful pictures of artist's desk and studio space. Besides, I thoroughly enjoyed samples of artwork that include concept drawings to finished art.

Great insight into how professional comic artists think
By Parka
[[VIDEOID:33977311]]The same script, when in the hands of different comic artists, are interpreted differently. With Working methods, author John Lowe has invited artists to interpret 3 scripts in this book, with an Q&A interview to look at their creative process.

The artists are Mark Schultz, Tim Levins, Jim Mahfood, Scott Hampton, Kelsey Shannon, Chris Brunner, Sean Murphy and Pat Quinn.

The artists talk about how they do compositions with respect to the script, finding and building reference materials, penciling, inking, lettering, and sometimes a little bit about their career in drawing. There's always something interesting to read about each artist. Such as Scott Hampton preference for printed reference over Internet reference because of resolution differences (but hey, there are lots of high res stuff out there today).

This book is recommended for comic artists looking to refine their storytelling techniques or searching for inspiration.

Like the Books title says
By Oscar Solis
I enjoyed this book very much. What is interesting is that although the artist's styles range from straight to cartoony, they all face the same storytelling issues. And that's what the majority of comics concern themselves with: storytelling.

Each artist gives a rundown on how he approaches the comic he has to draw, from the types of pencils and pens/brushes used to even, in some cases, the size of paper, down to the finishes. It's all very clear. If you can't be at the side of the artist when he creates the work, this is a great substitute.

I do have one quibble, despite a five star rating (for editorial content). For whatever reason, the publishers chose to present the question asked in a plain text and the artist's answers in italics which is inverse to how these things are usually presented. But that's a minor quibble (maybe it only bugs me). Otherwise, buy this book. You won't be disappointed.

The Number 7, by Jessica Lidh

It all starts with a mysterious phone call from Louisa's decorative antique phone. And that wouldn't be so strange, except that the phone is unplugged, and has been for years. Frightened by the call and its message--and questioning her own sanity--Louisa listens as a somehow-familiar voice describes a lost family secret about Louisa's grandfather and his daring involvement in resisting the Nazi scourge in his native Sweden during World War II. Piecing together each clue she can find, Louisa begins to see how her grandfather's guilt and shame continues to haunt her own father, and the rest of her family, decades later, planting seeds of doubt that threaten to tear them all apart.
Now desperate to know the full truth, despite the charming distractions of a boy with secrets of his own, Louisa becomes consumed with her discoveries, which she passes off to her parents as a school history project. Digging through old family albums and letters, she at last begins to see that the phone call was only the beginning, and that she is the one meant to be the messenger who can bring the truth of the past to light--before it's too late for her family.

From School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up—Louisa and her sister are brought to Pennsylvania by their widowed father to live in the home of his once-estranged, now-deceased parents. Louisa soon begins receiving calls from her dead grandmother through an old telephone in the attic. The calls share family secrets and events that took place in Sweden during World War II. It is through these phone calls that the narrative jumps between present day to the past. Louisa is a sweet-natured, somewhat introspective teenager who is still grieving from the loss of her mother, trying to figure out how to open up to her father and sister. She is in the center of a fairly innocent love triangle and is well adjusted to the idea of her father dating someone new. She also doesn't seem too preoccupied with the fact that her dead grandmother is calling her on a rotary phone to tell her about the Holocaust. The main character of the historical sections, Gerhard (Louisa's grandfather), is fleshed out, and the tension in those historical chapters builds well. He is only slightly older than Louisa's 16 years, and the severity his circumstances versus her "which-boy-to-choose" situations eventually hits home for her. The story is interesting and highlights a part of World War II history that isn't often addressed. Strengths include a light romance, some interesting historical references, and strong pacing. The phone calls from the dead, along with a little touch of astrology and Dad's "psychic" new girlfriend, made the suspension of disbelief challenging at times. A few loose threads do not resolve fully, such as Louisa's sister engaging in some self-harm behavior and a brief bullying scene. An additional purchase for teen collections.—Heather Massa, East Rockaway Public Library, NY

An un plugged telephone reveals a family secret left in Sweden
By S. Kopperman
The number 7 is a beautifully written book that combines the everyday experiences of a teenage girl with the extraordinary truth about her Swedish grandfather. I was drawn to this book because of my interest in all things Swedish. The book did not let me down. Though listed as a novel for young adults - and filled with plenty of content for a teen to appreciate - this adult enjoyed the entire novel. I was kept guessing until the very end the significance of the title. All in all a well crafted - thought provoking - mystery. I hope to read more from this new novelist.

A Fascinating and Quick Read.
By Natalie @ BookLoversLife
First things first, that cover is awesome because it represents the story perfectly!! Secondly, this was a fascinating and intriguing read. I had never heard of it before but loved the sound of it when I got it for review so dived right in.

Louisa, her sister and her dad move back to his childhood home. While in the attic one day, the antique phone up there starts to ring. She answers only to hear her dead grandmother on the line. She tells Louisa that she has a secret that needs to be told, and so begins the tale of Louisas grandfather and his Swedish roots.

For me, the best thing about this was the Grandfathers tale. It was absolutely fascinating. I also loved how the author brought the secret to life. The fact that it came in the form of telephone calls every so often was awesome. It made the story that more suspenseful and intriguing. You could also feel how frustrated Louisa was with not hearing the full story and only getting it in bits.

The book is told from both Loisas POV and her granddads POV. Louisa side of the story centers on her adjusting to life after losing her mother and moving to a new place. She has a lot to deal with and now she is getting phone calls from beyond the grave. I really liked Louisa, she was level headed although I didn't like the way she was with the boys in her life. There is a love triangle, which I hate!!!! Louisa just acts weird around them. When she is with one guy she seems to forget about the other. She couldn't make up her mind and that annoyed me.

I cant say too much about the granddads story because I could ruin something but I will say that it was fascinating. Its set in the time of Hitler and just before WW2. I loved the setting for it because Sweden was neutral during the war and its such a beautiful place.

The only bad thing about it is the love triangle (I cant stress how much I hate them) and how Louisa was with the boys. It felt unreal and brought down the rating.

Anyway, overall I really enjoyed the book. It was a fascinating and quick read. It a tragic tale but also a hopeful one. Its a story of love, loss and family and one you will enjoy.

Unique and Family Oriented. Love the integration of historical fiction.
By MirandaMowbray
Going into The Number 7, I had absolutely no idea what it was about. I love going into books blind, and from the cover I could only assume that this was some sort of...adult 1920s murder mystery? But that was definitely not the case! Inside is a crazily unique blend of romance, historical fiction, and paranormality that I couldn't help but fall in love with.

Louisa was immediately so easy for me to relate to, and I had a lot of fun reading her story. I have to comment on the fact that, yes, this is another "magic phone" book that is vaguely reminiscent of Rainbow Rowell's Landline. It's hard not to draw the comparison. But besides that one element, the two books are completely different from each other. I really enjoyed how the phone allowed the story to become a little bit paranormal, but it didn't go too far and overshadow the other elements. It was also a super creative way to facilitate the reader in seamlessly switching between Louisa's story in the present and her grandparents' story in the past.

But I do think I should mention that, while the historical fiction aspect of The Number 7 plays an important role, it's really mostly a contemporary that focuses strongly on romance. And there is a love triangle. I think that the love triangle is probably what stopped me from rating this book higher. It's common knowledge at this point that readers are kind of done with love triangles unless they're insanely well written. And unfortunately it wasn't. I just couldn't feel strongly about either of Louisa's love interests — they were very flat, uninteresting characters, and because of how short the book is, there ultimately weren't a ton of scenes with her and each one individually. So I never ended up rooting for one or the other, and then had a hard time understanding how Louisa eventually made her choice, because I honestly couldn't have cared less about who she ended up with in the end.

My favorite part of The Number 7 was definitely the historical fiction part of the story and how it integrated with Louisa's current life. I loved that there was such a strong sense of family in this novel. A lot of times, those relationships are either left out or negatively portrayed in YA fiction, so it made me happy to see Lidh do something nice with it instead. There were a lot of problems in Louisa's family life, don't get me wrong, but you can tell how important family is to her from the very beginning, and repairing those broken pieces is definitely her highest priority regardless of how many times she swoons over Gabe and Chris.

Overall, this book was a quick, entertaining read that even managed to tug at my heartstrings a few times. Louisa's story is an interesting one, and I'm so glad that I didn't decide to pass this one up based on the cover (don't let it fool you, this is not secretly an Agatha Christie novel, I promise). If this is Lidh's debut, I can't wait to see what she'll come up with next!

Superb overview of modern Organization Development
By Paul M. Cadario
Edited collections at this price point can be a problem. But compared to its competitors, this NTL Handbook is an outstanding volume, written by some of the biggest names in OD for practitioners at all levels. Great value after you get over the sticker shock.

As a skimmed the book I was amazed by the new insights that leapt out at me, by the clear, jargon-free writing (relatively, after all it's a professional book) and by the generous references and citations. History, ethics, techniques, it's all there. While the formatting of tables is sometimes inconvenient (I found myself turning the book sideways more than I should have had to), it's a small price to pay for the comprehensiveness of the treatment.

My only disappointments were the two chapters on large group interventions. One covers the familiar territory the familiar way (refer to the books you already own). The other gives a partial account of the newest, technology-enabled 'town meetings' without grounding the story in the theory of why they work (or should) and how cost-effective they are as OD interventions, as opposed to political rallys. The rest of the book is fresh and new, even of topics that we practitioners think we know like the back of our hand. I marvelled at the new life some chapters breathed into traditional material.

This book from NTL Institute should be in every consultant's library, as a refresher and, more important, as a source of new inspiration as you work with organizations and the people in them.

Far Too Academic--I Returned It
By William Corsair
I really tried to enjoy this book, but after about 45 minutes with it I realized that it was just too academic. I was exposed to much of this material in graduate school (back when the NTL Institute was just called National Training Laboratories), but I thought it might be useful in my consulting practice with government and military leaders. Unfortunately, it reads like any other book of readings about OD. I simply couldn't justify the expense of keeping a limited-value book on my shelf, so I returned it.

Don't get me wrong; I love OD, Change Management, and Leadership--all subjects I teach. It's just that this is a stereotypical 300-400 level or graduate course book--a book of readings by various OD practitioners.

There is far more usable and readable material out there.

An exceptional compilation of the fundamental historical and operational elements and iterations of this still-emerging field. Very insightful both for the academic and the practitioner.

A journey into the jungle unleashes pent-up desires
By Libertyne
Megan, who has two PhDs, needs to do fieldwork in Africa on a remote and isolated tribe's matrimonial habits. Her husband goes along. After a weeklong trek in with their tall, handsome African guide, the research goes well for a few days until suddenly the village women stop talking to her. She hasn't undergone the village's initiation rite for women, wherein the brides sleep with the chief the night before their honeymoon, and the unmarried adult women sleep with him at some point anyway, symbolizing their membership in his household should they ever want or need it, and a warning to other men against mistreating them. Megan talks her husband into letting her do it - and only then does he find out she's the chief's property, not for a night, but for ten days.

So begins an epic case of jungle fever, which continues after the couple returns to the States. Megan, now having a taste for BBC, undertakes ever-wilder and raunchier adventures. Michael, cuckolded, is conflicted about it but decides to let her as long as he retains veto power and gets to watch. As he battles his own feelings part of him wants to let her do what she wants, as a form of revenge.

Megan's transformation from proper scholar into ravenous wild woman isn't entirely convincing, but the sex is way hot. The African tribal stuff was handled better than I expected; it was remotely plausible.

Another Great Matthew Lee book
By mark lovett
Another Great Matthew Lee book. Plenty of sex and cuckolding, with a husband fighting his desires. Only thing, I would have loved to see more action in Africa in the village or with the guide. beyond that it was super hot read. Keep up the great writing.
